Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) released a new version of his Medicare for All bill on Wednesday, keeping true to form by championing one of the most ambitious health policies in the country. So far, the proposal has the support of more than a dozen Democrats, including fellow 2020 candidates Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Kamala Harris (CA), Elizabeth Warren (MA), and Cory Booker (NJ).

Sen. Bernie Sanders, who lost his last bid for president, is unveiling the most recent version of his Medicare proposal Wednesday. Once dismissed as too radical by many Democrats, his universal health care plan is now being co-sponsored by four of his opponents in the race. It is called "Medicare For All". Ed O'Keefe spoke with the self-declared Democratic socialist.

Spending Estimates Under Medicare for All

Under a Medicare for All plan similar to some proposals being discussed in Congress, total health expenditures would be an estimated 1.8 percent higher in 2019, relative to the status quo. While this is a small change in national spending, the federal government's health spending would increase substantially, rising by an estimated 221 percent.
