The Senate on Friday threw a wrench in the GOP's plans to avert a shutdown, blocking a House-passed stopgap measure that would fund the government through Nov. 21.
Republicans also defeated an alternative proposal that would have moved the deadline to Oct. 31.
Democrats vowed to vote against the funding bill, demanding restoration of Medicaid support and action to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that are set to expire at the end of the year.
