Schumer says he will not support 7- or 10-day stopgap to avoid shutdown

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) said he would not support a weeklong or 10-day government funding measure to avoid a government shutdown on Wednesday and buy more time to negotiate with President Trump and GOP leaders.

Schumer said he felt that Monday’s meeting with Trump at the White House made some progress because it gave him and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) a chance to warn Trump directly about the possibility that thousands of Americans ...

Schumer: Trump, GOP leaders are ‘divided’ over health insurance subsidies in funding bill

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) said a rift is emerging between President Trump and GOP leaders in Congress about whether to use a short-term government funding bill to prevent health insurance premiums from soaring next year because of the expiration of enhanced subsidies at the end of this year.

“The particular focus was on health care. When we made these arguments it was clear there was a division or possible division between the president and the two Repub...

Vance: US headed for shutdown ‘because the Democrats won’t do the right thing’

Vice President Vance warned that the government is heading for a shutdown, blaming Democrats for a potential government funding lapse after a meeting with President Trump and congressional leaders at the White House.

“The principle at stake here is very simple. We have disagreements about tax policy, you don’t shut that government down. We have disagreements about health care policy, but you don’t shut the government down," Vance told reporters after the meeting.

When was the last government shutdown? A timeline

Congress is barreling toward a government shutdown with both sides digging in two days before the Oct. 1 funding deadline.

Republicans are insisting on a "clean" continuing resolution that would fund the government until Nov. 21.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), the Democratic leaders in the Senate and House, are demanding concessions to protect health care, including reversing Medicaid cuts passed in the GOP's tax and spending megabill...

House GOP leaders rally their members ahead of expected shutdown

House Republican leaders rallied their members ahead of a government shutdown deadline this week, telling members in a Monday conference call to stay unified as Republicans aim to jam Senate Democrats into accepting a “clean” short-term continuing resolution to keep the government funded.

Multiple sources on the call told The Hill that the expectation, unless there is some last-minute breakthrough at a White House meeting, is that there will be a government shutdown startin...

Swalwell on shutdown possibility: ‘I don’t want to be a co-signee to this tyranny’

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) in a Monday interview explained why he didn't think Democrats should back the GOP funding measure that would prevent a government shutdown Wednesday, saying he did not “want to be a co-signee to this tyranny” from the government.

“Why would we want to continue to be, you know, co-signees on this madness that is hurting our friends and neighbors and making us look less and less like America?” Swalwell told CNN’s Kate Bolduan on “CNN News Central...

Do Social Security payments stop during a government shutdown?

(NEXSTAR) – It’s looking increasingly likely that a government shutdown is imminent, with lawmakers from both parties saying they have no intentions to negotiate on funding legislation ahead of the Oct. 1 deadline.

“If it has to shut down, it’ll have to shut down,” President Trump said Friday, blaming Democrats for any lapses in funding.

Democrats, meanwhile, say the GOP is refusing to come to the table on what they view as key healthcare issues, including ex...

Jeffries warns of ‘five-alarm fire’ on shutdown, looming health care cuts

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) warned Monday that Democrats won’t accept any Republican spending bill that makes life more expensive for working class people, pointing specifically to looming health care cuts as a “five-alarm fire” that must be addressed to win his party’s support for legislation preventing a shutdown.

Just hours before he and other top congressional leaders were scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House, Jeffries amplified t...
