Reforming 340B vital for affordable medication for low-income patients

When the 340B drug pricing program was established in 1992, Congress intended for the program to help low-income and uninsured patients with their prescription drugs. The pharmaceutical companies whose drugs are covered by Medicaid are required to participate in the program, offering discounts for drugs to patients on average at 25 to 50 percent of the wholesale acquisition cost.

Unfortunately, today, the 340B program is failing those it was meant to serve. There i...

To repair our fiscal foundation, we need to bend the health care cost curve

Our total national debt has ballooned to nearly $35 trillion – the highest level in U.S. history. This translates to over a quarter of a million dollars — $265,838 to be exact — of accumulated liabilities for every American household.

Rural health outcomes would improve if more states expanded Medicaid, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra told a Senate panel Tuesday.

During a hearing on the administration's budget request, Sen. Cindy-Hyde Smith (R-Miss.) said she is particularly worried about maternal care deserts caused by hospital closures. Mississippi sees some of the worst maternal health outcomes in the country, she said, and often leads the country in infant mortality.

Nearly one-quarter of adults booted from Medicaid are still uninsured, survey finds

Nearly a quarter of adults who said they were disenrolled from Medicaid coverage in the past year since states started resuming eligibility checks remain uninsured, according to a survey released Friday by KFF.

The survey is the first to look at health coverage among adults who had Medicaid coverage in early 2023, just before states resumed eligibility checks and disenrollments after pandemic-era protections ended.

It found that nearly half of th...
